The Passion of Anna (Sweden, 1970)
They say films from Scandinavian countries are always different from those of Europe in general. I agree with that, especially when you discover films like this one from one of the most famous and talented Swedish director, Igmar Bergman. His films are all about human emotions and psychological dramas. In The Passion of Anna, actor Max von Sydow plays a man who lives alone in his cabin in an almost empty island. He meets Anna and they start a relationship. Anna is a widow who lost her husband and son in a car accident. This incident has severe repercussions in her behaviour. Max, on the other hand, is a man who rarely shows emotions or feelings, and by the end of the film he breaks down emotionally. Meanwhile, strange animal killings and sacrifices are happening in the island, and the police are clueless up until the very end of the film.
For a movie that had no actual written script (only a short story written by Bergman outlining the main scenes), the Passion of Anna (originally titled The Passion in its native country) is a good experiment of how human emotions affect daily life in a very negative way.

The Elephant Man (USA, 1980)
This was David Lynch's first big budget (mainstream) film, this time based on a true story. The story is of an Englishman who suffered severe deformations in his body. The movie was shot in black & white (David Lynch would later declare he would rather choose black & white than color for his next films), the atmosphere is sad and depressing at times, but always trying to stay true to the real story. The first scenes are pure David Lynch, with strange elephant images and noises. Most of the actors are from England, and Anthony Hopkins plays the doctor who finds and treats the elephant man at the London Hospital. The elephant man talks quite a lot in the film, although in real life he could barely open his jaw and barely pronounce any word at all. Did you know he actually got a free room where he could stay the rest of his life at the London Hospital thanks to a letter written by the Queen of England?

Les Maîtres du Temps (France, 1982)
The French René Laloux won a Palme d'Or more than 15 years ago with his original animation films. In "The Masters of Time", Laloux works with the best cartoon designers from Europe, creating in this way a world of strange planets, where cosmic sounds merge with water-spurting plants and animals. It is like a cartoon for adults, although there is no sexual content or violence. The concept of invading planets by stopping their time and going back 60 years is quite strange, and at times difficult to understand, so you might better pay close attention if you watch this animation film.

Cuidado con el frío
Pronostican mucho frío para los próximos días. Lo más chistoso es la manera en que los canales de televisión locales tratan el tema: abríguese bien, llegaremos al punto de congelación!! Onda fría azota la ciudad! Ya dijeron que llegaremos a cero grados, en otro canal se aventaron a decir que llegaremos a -2 C. Todavía más chistoso es que casi nunca sucede como predicen. Estoy seguro que no llegará a cero grados y además estará soleado. And so what? Pónganse una chamarra más encima y listo. Es mi humilde recomendación.

El intercambio de regalos
Lo mejor de las posadas es inevitablemente el intercambio de regalos. Puede ser una experiencia agradable; puede también convertirse en una experiencia macabra y egoista. Nuestro intercambio en el trabajo fue muy divertido. En pocas palabras cada quien llevó lo que quería obtener de regalo. Según el procedimiento, cada quien, al azar, iba abriendo un regalo, y después tenía la opción de quedárselo o cambiar por otro que estuviera ya abierto. O sea, se podían arrebatar los regalos. Después de aproximademente cinco movimientos de intercambio entre Carolina, Alicia y yo, obtuve el regalo que yo había traído a la posada (un rompecabezas tercera dimensión). Mi objetivo se había cumplido. Carolina se quedó con su portaretratos de madera, y Alicia con su reloj para la cocina, tal como planeado, y todo mundo satisfecho. Cada quien llevó el regalo con el que se iba a quedar... yes!

collègue de travail 2: Bien sûr, je vous expique.. disons que un "vieux" prend sa douche, et du coup il tombe, et il se casse la gueule, alors...

collègue de travail 2: Non, mais c'est du sérieux ça!! Il y en a plein comme ça qui se cassent la gueule!!
Jorge: Oui, mais, la façon dont vous vous exprimez.. ça me fait rire, c'est tout.. ja ja ja
collègue de travail 2: Mais ça arrive aux vieux! Il peut arriver qu'un vieux commence pisser sans se rendre compte, voilà pourquoi on a besoin des couches...

JAN SVANKMAJER
Acabo de descubrir al director checo Jan Svankmajer; no que ya haya visto alguna película de el, eso sucederá en enero, pero al menos sé que es un autor surrealista, y uno muy interesante. Su combinación de animación y actores reales lo hace un cineasta muy original. Los temas que trata también están medio tenebrosos, muchas veces controversiales. Su obra artística fue censurada durante los años del comunismo en la ex-Checoslovaquia por un período de 7 años, durante los cuales se concentró en hacer poemas táctiles.
