Farewell My Concubine (Bawang Bie Ji), China, 1993

Do You Remember Dolly Bell?

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (Romania, 2006)

Romanian director Cristi Puiu has put up a film that is slow and difficult to sit through, but the realisitc effect is remarquable. We follow in real-time Mr. Lazarescu's journey to four different hospitals in the capital Bucharest. It all starts with a small pain, a neighbour calls the ambulance and before you can say "hospital", the ambulance nurse takes him to the first hospital, where bureaucracy, indifference and inefficiency are more than evident. He is taken to a second, and then a third hospital, until finally, arriving at the fourth one at 3am, he is admitted for an emergency operation, after having started his journey at 10pm! In the movie we do not see if he dies or not, the ending being quite abrupt. But we know for certain that anyone needing an emergency treatment in Bucharest will better think twice next time they decide to go to a public hospital.

Tokyo Story (Japan, 1953)

Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story follows an aging couple who decide to visit their children and grandchildren in different cities in Japan. When they get to visit their daughter in Tokyo, they soon find themselves to be more of an obstacle than a pleasant visitor. Their daughter takes them to a guided tour around the city, but afterwards, they decide it's time to leave and go back to the countryside where they live. Not until a tragic event takes place do the children realize how important their parents are and continue to be throughout their lives. The movie explores the relationship between parents and children, and it exposes family values in a simple and truth-to-reality way that only Ozu's movies can achieve. This is considered to be one of the best Japanese movies ever made. Judge for yourselves.

That Obscure Object of Desire (Cet Obscur Objet du Désir), France, 1977

Spanish director Luis Bunuel specialized in surreal films. He was very much influenced by French writer André Bréton (The Surrealist Manifesto, Nadya, etc.) and his films are strong influence of Bréton's theories of artistic expression. In this movie, Mathieu is travelling from Sevilla to Paris by train. In the couch he meets a couple of people to whom he starts telling a story of his love affair with a woman named Conchita. From this moment, the movie goes back to Mathieu's first encounter with this very attractive woman. In his films Bunuel has incorporated narrative elements that are still being used in many surreal films, like the use of two actresses for the role of Conchita. In one scene we see one actress, the next scene you see the other actress, and so on. Sometimes he would use the same actors for several roles. At the end of his career, Bunuel was very interested in the subject of terrorism, and we can see that in several scenes in this movie. A car blows up all of a sudden and none of the characters seem particularily bothered by it. I believe Bunuel was influenced by what Bréton wrote in one of his books: "the purest act of surrealism in the real world is to go out on the streets and shoot people at random".

The Pornographers (Japan, 1964)

In this movie from Shohei Imamura, a group of friends start shooting amateur porn movies and sell them to friends and basically whoever is interested. The official title of the film is The Pornographers: Introduction to Antropology! But this is by no means a softcore porn, on the countrary, the theme of voyeurism is handled with a lot of professionalism. The viewer ends up as an accomplice to what is going on in the screen. In one scene, a father tries to involve his daughter in the shooting of one of his videos, and in another weird sceen, a woman is strongly convinced that his recently dead husband has reencarnated in a fish she keeps in a small bowl. Some scene are shot from the perspective of the fish, from inside the bowl towards the outside rooms in the appartment. Imamura is a pioneer in controversial subjects in Japanese cinema.

The Amphibian Man (Человек Анфибия ), Russia, 1961

Forget Batman, Superman and all the other super heroes you have known for many years... the Amphibian Man is the real thing! Well, not exactly. At least it was in the former Soviet Union, back in the sixties. This movie, based on a novel by famous Russian writer Alexander Belyaev, tells the story of a young man who can breathe underwater, and so he gets to be called the amphibian man. The movie holds the record in the box office of Soviet movie theaters.

It is your average low budget science fiction movie, only even more low budget thanks to the Soviet special effects crew, whatever that was. Our hero meets Guitare (that would a woman's name) and falls in love. You see, he feels lonely. He lives in a mansion on the top a hill only with his father, a famous scientist, who by the way was the person who operated him as a kid, removing one of his lungs and replacing it with fish gills. It all happens in a strange country (perhaps Cuba, telling from the signs in the streets). More than science fiction it is a romantic story for children. There is dancing and singing, and our hero the Amphibian man does anything he can to keep Guitare by his side. Of course Guitare is about to get married to a rich guy, Don Pedro (yes, that is also the name of a cheap Mexican brandy).

As usual in most Soviet movies, there is a hint of hidden but easy to perceive propagandistic ideology; the Amphibian man goes to town until to come across the "greedy" fish merchant who won't give fish to the poor, while his father the scientist is trying to create an underwater world where there'd be no rich nor poor and everyone would be equal. Does it sound familiar? It is funny because it is too obvious, but I was overall surprised by the DVD transfer; the colors are rich and clear. If you want to discover what science fiction looked like back in the communist Russia, this is a definitely a classic not be missed.
79th Academy Awards

This year I am happy that the German film "The Life of Others" won the Oscar for best foreign language film. However, it's a shame that "Babel" did not win more Oscars.

The Life of Others (Das Leben der Anderen) Germany, 2006

Poet and playwright Georg Dreyman and his girlfriend, the actress Christa Maria Sieland, lead a successful life in former East German. Sooner than later, the Stasi (State Security) officials begin suspecting Dreyman; he is way too perfect, and he must be hiding something. Hiding what exactly? We never know, but back in those days, almost anything that was not approved by the Communist government was considered suspicious and even illegal. The government places hidden microphones all over Georg's appartment, and he is monitored night and day until they find out he has plans to publish an article in a West German magazine. Nevertheless, the official who finds out about his is too touched by what he is discovering, and perhaps out of pity starts to protect him by reporting lies and hiding Georg's real plans. The movie is extremely well cast. All actors deserve an award here, and the story structure is remarkable, as well as the music score. The is a very intelligent movie that portrays the atrocities committed during the Communist regimes in many Eastern European countries. Little is known abut this period of history, but this movie will surely help bring some attention to this topic.

Hawaii, Oslo (Norway, 2004)

The stories of five different characters come together in a car accident. In one story, a young woman is looking for his boyfriend to get married because she had made a promise 10 years ago. In another story, two kids live by themselves and do graffitti paintings in the walls of downtown Oslo. Their mother tried to commit suicide but finally decides to look for her children. Another story involves a newborn child with a heart deficiency, whose expensive operation is the only option his parents have to save his life. The father decides to go and rob a bank, and by the last scenes all the stories start to come together. The background music is eerie and mysterious, and the photography of downtown Oslo is really good. Why Hawaii? That is the name of a bar in the city, and the place where one of the characters wants to take his brother, who is kept in a mental institution. This film was proposed for an Oscar nomination for best foreign language film in 2004.
The Sweet Hereafter (Canada, 1997)

Director Atom Egoyan explores the feelings and strong emotions of a small community struck by a tragic car accident. A school bus suddenly slips down the road and ends up in a frozen lake. Needless to say, all passengers die and the bus driver is to blame. A lawyer, who at the same time is dealing with his drug-addict daughter, decides to take the case in his hands and interview some of the kids' parents. It is an intense flashback of memories throughout the film, and it's depressing atmosphere will leave viewers wth a bitter, and not sweet, aftertaste. A very emotional and sad made for TV movie from one of Canada's most acclaimed film directors.

Woody Allen: three comedies
Hollywood Ending (2002), Anything Else (2003), Zelig (1984)

I got to see three Woody Allen comedies, and although he is not one of my favourite filmmakers, his movies are always original and sometimes sarcastically funny. What I find amazing is Woody Allen's capacity to come up with so many stories in such short periods of time.

In Hollwood Ending, Woody is about to start in an interesting project. He plays the role of a movie director. His former wife proposes a movie project, and he is chosen as the director. Right before shooting begins, he becomes completely blind! According to the doctors it is all merely psychological; there is nothing wrong with his eyes. With the help of his assistant, Woody goes through the whole shooting without ever seeing what he is directing. Nobody suspects until the end, where the plot gets more complicated and poor Woody sees his movie slowly turn into a fiasco.

Anything Else tells the story of a couple, whose unstable relationship affects others in many ways. In this movie, Jerry is a stand-up comedy writer, whose girlfriend (Christina Ricci) always makes his life impossible. She is a wannabe actress who takes too many pills and is only concerned with her weight. Jerry's friend, David (played by Woody Allen) is a neurotic university professor who gives good and bad advices to his friends. Together they make Jerry's life nearly impossible, until David suggests an escape that can save Jerry's career as a writer.

Zelig is a strange film. Shot in black and white, is sort of a fake documentary about the life of a man known as the Chameleon Man, Mr. Zelig (played by Woody Allen) in the 20's and 30's. The Chameleon man was able to change his physical appearance depending with whom he was hanging around. As preposterous as the plot sounds, the excellent cinematography and effort put into creating every character and fake interview make it look like the real thing. Particularily funny are the scenes where the Chameleon Man appears at an outdoor Nazi congregation in Munich, and we see the scene of Hitler giving his speech and in the background the Chameleon Man is waving, or when he interrupts in the middle of a Sunday Mass given by the Pope, appearing in the balcony of the Vatican! A truly original and well done film.

Sophie Scholl (Deutschland, 2006)

Babel (2006)

The last film in Inarritu's trilogy deals about human solitude and desperation. Three different stories happenning in three countries are told alternately. In the first one, two Maroccan brothers shoot at a tourist bus hurting one of the passengers. In the second story, a Japanese girl tries to overcome her solitude and the death of her mother in a very unconventional way, and in the last story we see the tragic destiny of a Mexican babysitter after having problems with the border patrol police. We do not get happy endings, the movie might feel a little pessimistic and sad, but there is anyways a slight chance for hope and a better future. As Inarritu stated, he tried to show how human beings, even with modern communication technology, are still having problems understanding each other and accepting their differences. This is one of the best films I saw in 2006.

Saraband (Schweden, 2005)

Kontrol (Hungary, 2003)

This is a darkly comic thriller set in the Budapest metro. The plot revolves around Bulcsú (Sándor Csanyi) a metro ticket inspector. He works with a team of quite crazy people. Together they inspect people and check if they have their metro ticket with them. They meet with many different types of crazy people. We get the impression the Budapest metro is world in itself, a world of psychos and weirdos. There is also a small love story between Bulcsú and the daughter of a metro train driver. Some dream scenes near the end make up for both an entertaining and original movie.
